I'm trying to get into the Christmas mood.

Small and beautiful...

I love violets, they remind me of my grandmother. Sometimes you were allowed to pick some and she would put them in a little vase.

Available in my Etsy shop.

Big brush, quick painting...

~~~~~~
Painting with a big brush is fun and a good exercise.
I was reminded of the Dutch expression: "Take big steps, get home quickly".
The fish painting is loosely based on a photo by Ruth Archer on Paint My Photo.
Treasures...
Herinner je je nog dat je ze vond toen je een kind was? Het waren echte schatten!
Ik vond ze in het park gisteren.
Herfst.
Remember you found them when you were a child? They were real treasures!
I found them in the park yesterday.
Blackbird...
Mr. Blackbird
Voortbordurend op het thema dieren, besloot ik deze regelmatige bezoeker aan mijn tuin te schilderen. Hij heeft deze typische hangende vleugels waardoor hij onmiddellijk herkenbaar is. Als ik in mijn tuin aan het graven ben, houdt hij mij gezelschap en komt heel dichtbij om de wormen op te pikken die aan de oppervlakte komen. Hoe dan ook, niet zo spontaan als het muis-schilderij, maar hier is ie!
Being on an animal theme, I decided to paint this frequent visitor to my garden. He has these typical drooping wings that make him instantly recognizable. When I am digging in my garden, he accompanies me and comes very close to pick the worms that appear to the surface. Anyway, not as spontaneous as the mouse painting, but here he is!
Nature morte...
Nature morte, het Franse woord voor stilleven, kwam in mijn gedachten als titel voor dit schilderij.
Dit veldmuisje vond ik op mijn terras een paar maanden geleden, waarschijnlijk slachtoffer van één van de buurtkatten. Hij (of zij) zag er zo perfect uit, helemaal niet beschadigd. Ik heb verscheidene foto's genomen voordat ik hem begraven heb onder de sering.
Ik wilde een zachte rand schilderen om de vacht te suggereren, maar de verf vloeide meer uit dan ik bedoeld had, zoals je kunt zien. In plaats van te stoppen en opnieuw te beginnen, besloot ik verder te gaan en dit is het resultaat.
Nature morte, the French word for still life, came to my mind as a title for this painting.
This little field-mouse I found on my patio a few months ago, probably victim of one of the neighbourhood cats. He (or she) looked so perfect, not damaged at all. I took several photographs before burying it under the lilac tree.
I wanted to paint a soft edge suggesting fur, but the paint flowed much more than I intended, as you can see. Instead of stopping and starting all over, I decided to go on and this is the result.
Odd one out...
Ik had deze bos felgekleurde gladiolen gekocht en één tak bloemen bleek een afwijkende kleur te hebben.
Het schilderij hieronder is één van de studies die ik maakte, om de vorm en de kleuren van de bloemen te verkennen.
Ik merk dat het maken van deze studies mij helpt om een onderwerp in de vingers te krijgen, en door ze 'studies' te noemen geeft het me de vrijheid om ze te mogen verknoeien. :)
Prettig weekend!
Bovenstaand schilderij is te koop in mijn Etsy shop.
I had bought this bouquet of brightly coloured gladioli and one branch of flowers turned out to have a different color.
The painting below is one of the studies that I made to explore the shapes and colours of the flowers.
 I find that these studies are really helpful to get a feel for a subject, and calling them 'studies' gives me the freedom to mess them up. :)
Have a nice weekend!
The painting above is available in my Etsy shop.
Stop and smell...
Ik kon niet besluiten welke schilderijen ik het eerst wou laten zien, dus het zijn twee berichten geworden op één dag. Hier is de andere.
Deze roos heb ik geschilderd voor de challenge van Paint and Draw Together. Ik ben er erg tevreden over, omdat het me nooit eerder gelukt is zo'n gecompliceerde roos te schilderen. Bovendien is het me voor het eerst gelukt om met verf en penseel te signeren, maar misschien had ik beter een minder opvallende kleur kunnen kiezen. :)
Ik vond dit citaat, en hij kan het weten:
"Er is niets moeilijker voor een waarlijk creatieve schilder dan het schilderen van een roos, want voordat hij dat kan doen, moet hij eerst alle rozen vergeten die ooit geschilderd werden." Henri Matisse.
~~~~~~~

I could not decide which paintings to show you first, so here is my second post for today.
Here is the first one.
This rose I painted for the Paint and Draw Together challenge. I am very pleased with it, because I have never succeeded in painting such a complicated rose before. I also managed to sign my name with brush and paint for the first time, but maybe I should have chosen a less striking colour. :)

I found this quote, and he should know:
"There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted." Henri Matisse.

Omelette...

Two small paintings for last week's challenge on Daily Paintworks. Both appr. 20 x 17 cm.
I gave this post a little darker background so they stand out better. These were fun to paint, just paint what you see and don't think. And I had a delicious omelette afterwards.
I like painting food! :)

Slowly softly...

Hi everyone, are you still there? I hope you had a wonderful summer.
I  am slowly painting again. Not painting and not blogging felt like skipping school in the beginning, which proved to me I obviously needed a break! :) In this painting I tried to combine hard and soft.

I'll be back...

Lieve blogvrienden,

Dear blogfriends,

After two and a half years of painting (almost daily) and 2 years of blogging (once or twice a week),
I am going to take a blog break.
But ... I’ll be back, I promise!
Thank you for all your support through the years!
A hug and an apple for all of you!

HAPPY PAINTING EVERYONE!

Guacamole...

I had planned to paint landscapes and cows, but my muse decided otherwise.
These screamed out to me in the supermarket, this DIY guacamole kit!

Zomer... Summer...

For everyone in Northern Europe who are affected by the wet and cold summer, I painted my muddy boots. This time it was fun to create mud! :)
I'm working at several ideas: landscapes, a still life and more cows.
So until next time and keep your feet dry!

Groene weiden... Green pastures...

Last year my son and I were in the province of North Brabant, a lovely part of Holland with woodland interspersed with farms, cornfields and lush green meadows.
Life is good in Brabant, says the song.

Pears... step by step...

See for demo with download here.

Both Irina and Pat asked me to make a video recently. My first thought was: have you seen what I threw away in the past week?! :) Well, a video I cannot do, but I can do a step by step photo series. You know I am absolutely no expert nor a teacher, but I can share what I have learned.
I used the same reference photo of the pears in my previous post, it is Challenge nr. 1 of Paint and Draw Together.
I made a quick drawing and started painting the pears and most of the background yellow, careful to leave the highlights white.

While that was still wet....
....I added sapgreen.... and vermillion red.
When the red threatened to take over the whole pear.... oops...
.... I used paper towel to remove the excess and soften the edges. Tip: try not to go back in again with the brush, but control the paint by tilting the paper.
I also added more yellow to both pears, making use of the nice property of yellow (and also clean water) to push other colours away.
Since it was all very wet....
....I then waited till the whole painting dried. When totally dry I carefully erased most of the pencil lines.
Then I added ultramarine blue, and softened edges here and there with a damp brush.
Then I added shadows and the last finishing touches....
and tadaaaaah.....
Pears for Irina and Pat

Iris...

These irises used to grow in my front garden, but they did not do very well there. So I dug them up and gave them to friends a year ago. And there they are thriving!

Druk, druk, druk.

The advantage of painting flowers, as opposed to portraits, is that it does not have to have exact resemblance. It will look like a flower anyway. Playing with wet in wet effects I painted this rhododendron flower yesterday. I think I'll crop it, as you can see below.

Lemons...

A couple of lemon studies. How many colours do you need to paint a lemon? :)
